September 2009
Since I last posted about my attempts to tighten the purse strings my efforts seem to have gone a little awry. I’m putting this down to our holiday last week and my little jaunt down south.
My latest haphazard attempt at frugality was order an organic veg box from Riverford. The prices seem reasonable along with the added bonus that it’s all organic and delivery is free (unlike the £5.50 I pay Sainsbury’s). The idea of eating seasonally also appeals.
So, this afternoon my first boxes arrived:

My flipping rubbish iPhone camera does not do these boxes justice, that and the fact I was hurriedly taking the pictures as Little E was screaming in teething pain from the front room didn’t add to the effect.
There’s absolutely tons of stuff!
In the Family Salad Box:
Cos Lettuce
Mixed Salad Leaves
Vine Tomatoes
Red Bell Pepper
Yellow Bell Pepper
Mixed Sprouted Seeds
(Plus I ordered a cucumber)
In the Roots & Veg Box:
Carrots
Potatoes
Leeks
Kale
Cauliflower
Broccoli
Celery
Onions
In the Fruit Box:
Apples
Bananas
Plums
Raspberries
Mango
My long suffering husband is in the kitchen as I type trying to decide what to make for tea from all this glorious food. We’ve filled our tiny icebox freezer to the brim with meat that was on offer and I have a pretty well stocked cupboards so hopefully this little lot should last us ’til payday next Thursday, at the very least.
I’m hoping it all tastes as good as it looks! Methinks there could be another order coming Riverford’s way.
So, over to you. Have you ever ordered a veg box? Did you think it was good value?
