We’re not strangers to scuppered plans in our household. Sometimes your day doesn’t quite turn out how you expect it to.
Big E turned three earlier this week. We promised him a trip to the zoo for his birthday but he was poorly on the day so we had to abandon our plans. Then when weather took a turn for the worse we had to rethink our strategy.
We decided instead to take him to the local steam railway. We’d been many times before and always enjoyed our day so it seemed like the perfect rainy day activity for a train mad toddler.
We arrived in the booking hall at the station. The train was waiting at the platform with five minutes to spare before departure. The husband waited at the booking window. He could see the ticket master through the frosted glass and could hear him talking. He tapped on the window and said hello. The ticket master ignored him. He knocked again but still no one responded.
By this time a queue had formed behind us, Big E was getting itchy feet and trying to drag me to the train and Little E had started to fuss and cry. He knocked one more time then to our dismay the guard blew his whistle and the train chugged away from the platform.
I was quite simply stunned as were the other people in the queue. The station was milling with customers and staff and no-one batted an eye lid. Being extremely a tad annoyed I may have mentioned quite loudly how disgusted I was at being ignored. As we left the station and returned to our car Big E became upset and kept apologising as he thought we’d not caught the train because he’d been naughty. Poor little fella.
Twice now our plans had been scuppered!
I was determined that Big E would get his birthday train ride so we drove back to our local station and bought return tickets to Leeds. Big E was thrilled! He sat with his nose pressed against the window the whole journey. When we got to Leeds he was amazed by all the trains. In a nut shell he loved it.

So you see, in spite of poor service and bad weather and nasty coughs and tiredness, when it comes to it, all’s well that ends well.
Thank goodness for that!

What shoddy service, I see an e-mail coming on. If you ever fancy a really great train trip the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Reailway is fantastic, both the mini's love it. We could always meet up then.
He looks so happpy and excited. I'm so glad he got his birthday treat in the end, despite the crappy train service, that's public transport for you.
That's utterly shocking! Put a complaint in writing and y ou know what? Name and shame them in your blog! Poor chap, but at least he had a nice day in the end.
Think you should name and shame them.
Glad he had a nice time in the end. We adults get so stressed about things going how we want then to. I love how easily pleased children are though.
Nothing changes does it? Still costs a bloody fortune for crap service!!!
Award for you at mine, hope you like it.
Love RMxx
Aww he looks like he had a fab time in the end. I really wouldn't have been happy with that service and would have probably said something as well.
How awful you were ignored. Send them the link to this post! We spent many hours on trains last summer, we weren't actually going any where in particular, we were just enjoying the ride and the view.
Sounds like it's time for a well worded letter and free tickets for anoTher attempt!
