If I knew you were comin’ I’d've baked a cake!

by Ellie on November 9, 2009

Me and the husband have been at it again (steady on).

Remember the Halloween pumpkin carve off? This time I challenged him to a birthday cake bake off. Each of us was to bake the most astonishingly spectacular birthday cake.

As always, I know mine is the epitome of birthdaytasticness but a bit of shoving my honed culinary superiority down his throat would be nice. I’m sure you won’t disappoint like you did before sob sob sob.

Now, being suckers for a bit of last minute deadline pressure neither of us began baking until 9pm on Saturday night.

With the children tucked up snugly warm in bed we donned our aprons (or would if we had any. Imagine me in this little Cath Kidston number if you will) and let the competitiveness fun begin. We baked ourselves into submission in a could of flour and icing sugar and once we were happy with our efforts, crawled up the wooden hill at 4:30am.

I cannot stress enough how much spousal kudos there is riding on this vote. I MUST win.

So here for your perusal are our amazing Delia-would-be-jealous creations:

Cake A

Cake B

I can trust you to make me victorious the correct decision this time, right?

Which is the most birthdaytastic cake?

I'm voting A – if only because Thomas looks like he has a moustache (sorry to 'whoever' made that one but he does!! And I love it!!)

The chocolate wins for originality though Thomas looks great (little shit!)

I like A and I think so will 3 year old! Even though B does have chocoate overload!

I'm voting for A, only because the number 3 on B reminds me of those colour eye tests you had to do when you were little. I think I would prefer to eat B though because it looks more chocolatey. I'm impressed with both as I can't cook cakes at all. I think you should post an idiot proof recipe!

I vote A for the francophile moustache (I'm with Josie on this one) and the fact its eyes follow you round the room.

My favourite (B) was winning yesterday but today it's lost its lead. Will have to vote again…

I couldn't decided so I went for both! They both look yummy!

They do both look delicious and if it was me I would go for the chocolate one as I love all things chocolatey. However my two year old is obsessed w/ trains especially Thomas so thinking from my little E's perspective it had to be A.

I vote A.

Ha, assumed the moustache was intentional and that it was your discrete way of swaying the votes!

Ha! Intentional moustache? Much as I love a good 'tache I'd hardly put one on my son's birthday cake on purpose for a bit of blog fodder LOL!
