Miss you! – A tale of how not to migrate to WordPress

by Ellie on February 8, 2010

The more savvy among you will notice that I’ve defected from Blogger. I finally bit the bullet and migrated to WordPress.

Hurrah?

Sort of.

You see, for a girl like me from a non techie background, everything I learn about the web is pretty much gleaned from Google. It’s my life manual. If you can’t Google it, I’m pretty certain it can’t be done, or at least hasn’t yet.

So, I did all the jiggerpokery I could, installed WordPress on my host, uploaded my Thesis theme, migrated my posts with the magic button, fixed my permalinks, updated my feed on FeedBurner.

Cue needle scratching across record.

What was that? FeedBurner?

That is the point at which I think I broke t’internets. For some reason I appear to have lost 160 subscribers/followers. I’m fairly certain you didn’t all desert me overnight…..at least I hope so! But now I feel all lonely. Sob, sob, sobbety sob.

Being a bit dim, I have no idea why it’s happened. I’ve tried to sort it out but to no avail.

This is where you come in. Please, pretty please with-a-cherry-on-top can you check your Google Reader/Feed Reader/Blog Roll and if it’s not been updated with today’s post, please could you re-subscribe to my feed by clicking the giant orange button?

I’ll be eternally grateful.

I promise!

P.S If you have any clues/tips/thoughts on how I can fix this giant technical mess I would be most thankful indeed!

Hello! Yes I am reading this updated post in my Google reader. I re-subscribed to your new feed last night. Took all of two seconds! So it is working. Your new WordPress theme looks great and I have had so many problems commenting on blogger over the weekend that this should make things easier!

Thanks Rosie. Am all lonely here in my shiny WordPress world!
Glad you can actually get on here! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

Last night I broke the interweb too! I managed to delete my wireless internet settings and still can’t get online (I’m using Mr’s PC) so you are doing better than me! Once I get up and running properly I will check my google reader to see that I’m still following :)

I think you are one brave mummy! I’ve subscribed and followed. I haven’t got the guts to change from Blogger coz I know I’d made a complete balls of it.

I was admiring your blog and Mama Kats, which is one of the reasons I chose the Thesis theme.

Trying not to be stressed out over the subscriber glitch, but you’re right, I’m sure they’ll return soon enough!

LOVE the new look! Oddly, i had ten unread posts in my reader this morning, so it refreshed my subscription for me – but was still there.
Welcome to wordpress! We’ve never regretted switching for a second.

I’m trying to convince myself that the benefits outweight the flaws.

So far extra traffic is definitely a bonus!

I had you, lost you, have resubscribed and now have about 18 pages open on my browser so I think that puts my tech-ness on a par with yours and I’m DEFINITELY not migrating to WordPress unless I get bored on my two days off over half term.

Love the new look

It’s all gone completely crazy! Apologies for clogging your reader with random old posts!

Unless you’ve got a few missing marbles (like me) if you ever decide to move pay a professional LOL!

Well done you! I’m really impressed. I think I heard you breaking t’internet from over here.

Anyway – I’ll be able to comment now without swearing like John Mcenroe (minus the sweatband)

There was swearing. Lots of.

I think the headband would suit you. Perhaps you should give it a whirl?

Congratulations on your move. Your blog looks great! I’ve been following you on Twitter for a while now & love your tweets as well. I’ll be sure to subscribe to receive email updates on your blog posts. I hope you’ll stop by my self-hosted wordpress blog website as well. Don’t ask me for advice though. I don’t know what I’m doing either. lol Have a great day.

Seriously though, despite the RSS issues I’m loving WordPress. It is just leaps and bounds ahead of Blogger.

Forgive me for asking, but as I’m just about to do exactly the same thing as you and number 1 attempt failed miserably… what format is the local host in.. I’m with UK2 so that’s my ISP and first up is loading all the WP stuff into the WP config file which includes typing in the name of the localhost (or server) but God only knows what that is. It doesn’t seem to be written down anywhere. Any clues? HELP! xx By the way your site looks gorgy!

You’ve lost me too! I’m with BlueHost for my hosting (about £54 for the year) but bought my domain from eNom ages ago.

Most of BlueHost’s stuff is ‘one click’ installation. No need to know too much techie stuff. Fairly idiot proof. Hell, I (almost) did it!

So in answer to you question, I haven’t a clue. Sorry!

Sounds bewildering. I’ve been tpying with the idea of doing something snazzy with mine for ages. Think I may hold off a while longer as I can barely suss out Facebook, never mind all this jiggery pokery! Have re-followed you anyway. x

Thanking you Mrs.

Great move, wordpress is far superior. You’ll soon have all your subscribers back. Maybe one day you’ll give our hosting company a go for your blog, I would have been able to offer awesome tech support ;)
