The beauty of him being that bit older now is he can play board games more easily, thanks to his burgeoning reading skills. He has a real appetite for learning new words, constantly tries to spell words he hears, and really enjoys word search puzzles.
We were recently offered Scrabble Junior to review, and I knew straightaway that he’d absolutely love it. In fact, when the box arrived he could barely wait to get stuck in!
Scrabble Junior is made by games giant MATTEL, and gives a brilliant introduction to the well-loved classic game for younger children. Suitable for children aged 5 – 10, the dual sided board allows younger players to participate in two games. One for emerging readers at the younger end of the age range, which involves matching letters, and filling in the blanks to spell words on a pre-printed, illustrated board. The second, recommended for age 7+, a basic version of the classic game with simple scoring rules for children who are more confident readers/spellers.
We were more than impressed with this game, the 6 year old loved the sense of achievement when he spelled words correctly, and even the 3 year old was able to participate, with our help, in the easy version, matching tiles to the letters on the easy board. Scrabble Junior is educational fun at it’s best!
I’d definitely recommend Scrabble Junior to parents keen to inject some extra fun into helping their children with literacy skills. It gets a huge thumbs up from us!
